Two years ago when we arrived in Hong Kong, the signs that read "subway" threw me for a loop, because they did not refer to a train system, but rather to an underground tunnel where pedestrians could walk from one side of the highway to the other. What I knew as a subway back in the United States is referred to as the MTR and has a distinct symbol of its own.
