Chungking Mansions.

Don't let the name fool you, there is nothing "mansion" about this place. Our first week in Hong Kong, we walked through Chungking Mansions and I didn't realize it was the famous Chungking Mansions. The first time we walked through it was to eat at an Indian restaurant in a sixth floor walk-up. At the time I was experiencing jet lag and walking through Chungking Mansions is an experience that assaults your senses.

Designated as a residential area, Chungking Mansions holds many guesthouses which are pretty basic and economical to stay at, which is perfect for backpackers making their way through Asia. Although Chungking Mansions is primarily residential, there are plenty of commercial shops and restaurants offering primarily groceries, food, and clothing from India. Chungking Mansion also offers many money exchange shops with good rates. This is definitely a unique culture within Hong Kong!
